Getting a rolling roaring/squeal type sound when the hubs are locked and driving at speeds above 20 mph after hitting a decent bump or patch of rough road. Goes away when I slow to 10 mph or less. The sound has a frequency to it, like it's only squealing on part of the rotation, so the faster I drive the faster the frequency. It happens whether I put the transfer case in 4wd or 2wd.
Had a buddy listening out the passenger window and we think it sounds like it's coming from the drivers side; but not at the hub... maybe from the area right near the differential.
not the driveshaft although it is possible i was thinking the axle shaft u joints you see them inside the steering knuckle and they are typically greasable

you don't have a " needle bearing" you have a sealed bearing ( 05 up) and it spins the most when the hub is unlocked and the axle shaft is shaft is stationary but the unit bearing ( wheel bearing) is spinning
Is the unit bearing (wheel bearing) the same thing as the "spindle bearing?"
I took it to the local shop and the knowledgeable guy there said it seems like a "spindle bearing." The sound seems like a "whine" of a bearing, rather than a clunk of a u-joint. What are your thoughts?
I'll probly pull it apart inspect it and it should be obvious whether it's spindle or u-joint... right? Should I do the u-joint either way? How often do they wear out?
the sealed bearing in the top picture ( the new style used in place of the old models needle bearing shown in the lower pic)
is referred to as the spindle bearing sometimes
it really holds the axle shaft stub axle and it is replaceable , fits inside the larger "unit bearing" AKA wheel bearing AKA Hub bearing the later being the most confusing term since the trucks have locking Hubs
to clarify in the pic you can see the red dust seal on the bearing I am pretty sure he is referring to? and c clip retaining the the bearing inside the unit bearing
they do not fail very often now that they are sealed not like the old needle unit if the grease dried up
