A friend of mine is looking for some help, he has a 04 f250 lariat with ESOF. When he turns the knob nothing happens, he says he can turn the hubs manually to lock, but not sure if that engages 4x4? Does just manually locking the hubs do anything? Where should he start to try to fix this problem? Thanks
Turning the hub locks will lock the front wheels to the front axle. The transfer case would still need to shift into 4 wheel drive for power to be transferred to the front differential/axle.
EDIT: Give me a sec. I will post a PDF for the 04 ESOF
Okay so if when the hubs are locked you flip the switch and nothing happens, either the switch or the motor could be bad? Does locking the hubs do anything without the t-case shifting? Like would you get more traction?
It's my friends truck, he checked the fueses and they were good, wasn't sure how to check the relays, but I read if you switch them around it is supposed to do something? Otherwise don't know how to test the relays
He did say he changed his battery's and now his truck only blows out the defrost, occasionally the vents but rest of the time defrost, could that be related
Yes. The hubs are vacuum pulse operated. Trace the plastic lines coming off the vac pump on the passenger side fenderwell all the way to the back of the knuckles looking for splits/holes etc etc.
The hubs never worked he said, he'd flip the Switch to 4x4 and nothing, he said that only after did he do his battery's that it stopped blowing out the vents, are there hoses near the battery's?
Yes. The vac lines originate from the vac pump, and canister, on the passenger side....right behind the battery.
