i have the same problem from what i have read and found out from other people ford was to worried about customer comfort when they designed it and set the clutch packs up too loose and arranged the friction disc "steel clutch steel steel clutch steel etc..." should be "steel clutch steel clutch steel etc..." so i people have rebulit them and changed the order and added another set to tighten it up and supposivly works pretty well.

Thanks for your input

Thanks for your input. I plan to remove the rear diff. cover and take a look. Expcet to replace the entire clutch pack. Will call Randy's ring & pinion.

Call Just differential and get the yukon rebuild pack. Changing the fluid won't cure your problem. Being a SD, you'll have the 10.5 sterling and SHOULD have the 3 pinion trac lok.

If the plates are set up correctly, how is this set up when driving around corners in the street in the rain?

I'm thinking of rebuilding mine and setting it up with an extra set of plates, but I'm wondering for a setup that will be used 99.5% on the street, and 0.5% in the dirt, as to whether I'll have problems in the wet. I have a CC LB, which probably makes it less noticeable.

Sterling 10.5" Limited Slip axle repair

I disassembled the axle and found that the clutch pack was installed as specified (plate, clutch, plate, clutch, etc). 5 of each plate type on both sides as specified in the manual. I did, however notice that I had 0.060" of wear as compared to a new set. I replaced all of the steel discs, clutch plates, shims and belville washers (Ford OEM part). All is good in the world. I did add another 0.030" of shims (0.015" to each side) as an extra measure. The original shim package was 0.060" per side, so my change took it to 0.075" per side. I tried to pack it to 0.115" on each side. but got bucking and popping in turns, so I went with what I stated above.

I also purchased a MagHytech diff cover that added two additional quarts to the total capacity (now 6 qts). I expect the diff to run much cooler (aprox. 15-30 degrees). I used Amsoil severe gear lube (95-140) and put 8oz. of FORD friction modifier in as well.
