You mention that leg shot, I made a bad shot on a buck out in San Saba MANY years ago and hit him in the leg - probably the worst shot I've ever made in my life and I say that because I'd rather miss than make a bad shot. Anyway I tracked him for about three miles and took multiple shots when I'd jump him but couldn't connect. I finally jumped him and with the last round I had (heck I only carry 5 rounds on me because who the hell shoots that many times at a deer), three miles away from my truck I hit him with an 80 yard dead run away from me right on the top of his back at the base of his neck and dropped him. I've never wounded a deer since. It's times like that where you realize shot placement, the right shot and when NOT to shoot is paramount to hunting.
