I'm not sure what it is. My truck did the exact same thing. When I checked the fuel pressure, it was over 75psi. I did it to my friends truck.. same thing.
I did notice one thing. It started fine when cold, because I let the glow plugs cycle. The pump had already kicked off. When hot, jump in and hit the key.. looooooong start.
