Correct, but a rear end speed sensor would also affect the speedo. It wouldnt register speed. Since your tach isnt working I would look at the tach pickup thats on top of the top timing gear cover (behind the oil fill location.) I've never owned an IDI automatic but since that tranny is electronic it would want RPM input to work properly i'd imagine.
About your glow plugs - unless its been grossly hacked into wiring oblivion, you might get away with just putting a glow plug controller on it and making it work properly. Unfortunatley, when they put a push button in it, they probably didnt switch the plugs out to 12v units... it takes them longer to heat up but they wont burn out...you put too much 12v to the OE 6v resistance plugs and they will mushroom the tips/blow the tips off if someone holds the button too long. I'd get a controller and new original glow plugs...be VERY careful taking the old plugs out as they will be sooted/possibly expanded into the holes and you can break them off and drop the tip into the combustion chamber....and let me tell you, that can turn into a bad scene real quick. Good luck.
