Working for the USFS for a couple summers, I was privvy to the details of 2 separate mountain lion attacks on our forest. In neither case would your M4 strapped to your chest have done anything for you except give you a cool shaped bruise.
Mountain lions tend to attack from above and behind. The only time I've seen one up close in the wild I about sh*t my pants because she TOTALLY had the drop on me. I had walked right under her on a trail. I dropped my pack, and pulled out my saw to take down a leaner, and when I scoped out the tree tops for potential hazards, I saw her. She looked at me, (and when a mountain lion looks at you, believe me, you FEEL it,) yawned, jumped down and walked away.
I was white as a ghost and sitting on the side of the trail when the rest of my crew caught up with me.
