Clunking when hubs locked in.

Ive posted this before but another quesion just came up. Is the clunking from the u-joint possibly from reaching the u-joints limit and not necessarily a bad u-joint? Just like when a driveshaft is at too sharp of an angle. I have the front end appart and i was going to replace the u-joints tonight. They appear tight no matter what i do to try to see if they are bad. I might just replace them anyways since im in that far. anything special i need to do when sliding the axles out from the diff? are there any pins?
