Just a guess, but could be the rectifier diodes went bad, allowing the batteries to short to ground through
the alternator windings. Think of the diodes as one-way valves, that let electricity OUT of the alternator, into the battery. If shorted, the diodes would allow the battery to short through the alternator.
Again, just my guess. Ask the shop, and let us know!
