They go in a little ways and then there is a bracket that clamps them on the the flange on the hitch. Its kindof a u shaped bracket that pinches the rear mounts to the hitch. I've had them on since december and haven't had any come loose. I've only hauled the camper once, when i picked it up. The only time someone wouldn't order a factory hitch was if they were gonna only pull fifth wheels or goose necks, but usually a hitch still comes with a tow pkg. I think you can order a universal rear mount for any hitch, but you need to see what kind of hitch it is and if the ends are open or boxed in. If there boxed then you are screwed. You would have to fab something up to mount them to or get an oem hitch.
