Is there a signifcant amount of rust on the splines between the yoke and the pinion gear? that is usually what makes the not tighten down. In that case I would pull it off and sandblast or chem remove the rust. Yes it is more work, but something like the differental is not somthing you want going bad on the road, or having to start over and but new gears.
