we used to burn lump coal in our wood stove in eastern montana. youd still have to burn wood to get the fire going but a big lump would burn all day and all night long and keep the house warm all winter. we got it straight from the mines for bout 36 bucks a ton and 1 ton would last a winter along with 2 quards of fire wood. here in northern idaho we dont have to coal as redily available as we used to.

only down side to burning coal is its creates as much ash as the amount coal you put in.
