trip from Florida to California

Well we started out in Jacksonville Florida. I was pulling one of those autotransports from U-haul with my wifes X-terra on it. We're almost out of florida when the alternator went out. Went to an autozone and swapped it out in the parking lot. Rest of the trip wasn't too bad until California. Only had about 6 more mile to get to our destination and we were going up some really mountainous roads.
Less than 100 yards from the peak the transmission starts slipping. I just barely squeezed over the top and the tranny is totally smoked. I 'm just coasting down the rest of the way but there was one more little hill that it just couldn't quite get passed. When I got out you could smell the burnt tranny fluid. Unhooking the trailer, the chains had fluid all over them.
Just over an hour the wrecker finally shows up. Needless to say, it took about 7 days for me to get my truck back but at least it's all fine and dandy now.
Just for general knowledge, how long are the transmissions usually good for? I got an 01 F-250 automatic and it had 219,000 miles on it when it went out.
