Are you noticing the thud or clunk sometimes when you come to a stop as well? If so, sounds like it's definitely a spline grease job. Common problem with super duty trucks. You'll need to drop the rear shaft of the 2 piece driveline. Yes, make sure you mark both the shaft and somewhere on the rear differential so you can line it up correctly when you re-install it. Ford sells a teflon spline grease for this application, but unless you want to spend $37 for a pint of grease, go to your local parts store and buy some slick 50 gl1 rated grease for $6. If you're careful you can reuse the rear clamp on the rubber boot. You only need to take the rear clamp apart and slide the rear shaft off. Grease the splines and put a dab into the female portion of the front piece. Put her all back together and enjoy thud free driving.
