fill the crankcase back up and have someone crank the motor while you watch. Odds are your leak is from the high pressure oil pump, and it is just a matter of where on the pump is leaking. Its not real common, but occasionally we see one that blows the snap ring out of the back of the pump and causes just what you described...it would be worth checking.
