Rear units almost always have a expansion valve and the front is an orfice tube, so when you turn off the rear the txv just closes off and stops flowing. Pretty sure low charge usually causes the rear to stop working first on those things. Best thing to do would be to take all the charge out of the system and recharge it by the weight on the label. Then you can start pulling apart the rear unit is the problem still persists.
