Steering wheel shimmy

I think I have two problems. I know my rotors need to be turned and need new pads. I have also found a bad joint where the long steering rod bolts to the pittman arm that seems to be causing the shimmy. Ford said I have to replace the entire rod. How do you remove the long steering rod? It looks like it screws into a coupling on the passenger side so do you just unscrew it? Should I replace the shorter drivers side rod while I'm at it? Is this a job I should even be trying to do? 2001 F250 7.3 2WD Thanks!
