New Guy Crazy luck need help fixing it.

Here's the story bought my first powerstroke about a year ago.I love the truck but ran into a problem seems the guy who had it before had the lift pump replaced. The mechanic who replaced did not tell him that the flat valve looking piece had broke off and fell down into the oil pan how do I know this because I found it in the oil pump recently. destroyed the oil pump and the front timing cover and also tore a hole in the bottom of my pick up tube screen. Long story short will a 1997 front timing cover work on a 1996. this will save me $400 because I found a used 97.

Thanks in advance for any input
