Ok so the consensus thus far is upgrade the head unit which I was trying to avoid. I guess let me shop around and see if I can find one that I like, that might keep some little darling from smashing out my beer window to get to it.
What about the speakers? I like to hear some good 'ol Hank Sr. nice and crisp and clear on my 8 tracks so it's a clear sound I'm looking for.
Also would a small amp be handy to have too?

Wow I didn't know you were only 8 years older then me.
I suggest replacing the head unit, the oem speakers with oem replacement 3-way or 4-way speakers with a 100watt or 200 watt amp to tie it all together. Over all cost if you get free install or DIY should be no more then 400 bucks. Then you can listen to Hank Sr or JR crisp and clear. Plus Curelysue can listen to the modern cds in this set up too.
