285 is the section width (width of the tire in millimeters). The height of the tire is going to depend on the aspect ratio, which is the second number in a tire size. For instance 285/70-17 is going to be 285mm (11.2") wide and the sidewall height is going to be 70% of that, or 200 mm (7.85"), with a 17" rim giving you an overall diameter of 32.71 inches.
