yea thats what i do when theres a show or they are really bad. im suprised it only worked ok for you. when i do it i use a lot of polish elbow grease and speed (powerball spinning). i think the major key that some people over look. (not calling you stupid) but is the amount of force you have to use to get the gunk off while polishing and then removing the polish.
