Really? I know it's flat around here, but I don't think I have EVER had a setup that could tx/rx at least 10 miles. I am currently running a Galaxy 959 and on AM it is talking about 10-15mi with a 5' Firestik. 10 miles if the truck is running, 15 if it is turned off. (I can't figure out if my RFI is from the fuel pump (common) or the vaccum pump. I think it is the latter, but not sure how to fix it) It is still a stock radio too. I would lay money on it that if I put my whip back on it would be a 15+ mile setup easy.

As for the OP. If you don't mind spending an evening getting it setup, a Cobra or Uniden unit (barring the miniature ones) should work just fine with either a mag mount or a permanent mount antenna and will yield FAR better performance than a handheld unit. I have never been able to get them to talk much more than I could see. If you go with a mag mount antenna make sure to clean good before putting it on and take it off and clean underneath it every once in awhile. Keeps the paint in better shape underneath. Good luck. Hope this thread doesn't get derailed too far.
