i just put a galaxy 979 in my f350 w/a 4.5' foot fiberglass antenna. it seems to work well. I think the above quote 10-15 mi radius is highly questionable (maybe on receive) but, anyway...
the radio was 160 (new) + 50 for the tune + another hundred for coax/stud mount.
just be sure you get a tunable tip (or easily tunable) antenna and you may have to spring for a cheap SWR meter for setup.

don't be intimidated by all the technical aspects - concentrate on proper wiring for power, good continuity in the antenna, and a well grounded vehicle.
it's not quite as simple as plug and play but, it's a fun project.
Yes, you'll need a legitimate antenna - mag mount would be easiest - mag on the roof would be best....i think.
then you can laugh at the trucker talk - it's quite entertaining.
